Google Stadia drops In-house Game Development
Google announced today that effectively immediately they are closing their internal SG&E development team. What does this mean? Their SG&E team was working on creating 1st party titles for the Google Stadia platform. Google most likely wanted to create a hit game that would draw more users on their platform.
However, in their announcement they state that time and money needed to make 1st party games is beyond the scope of their Google Stadia project. This was taken from their announcement
Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games.
Google wants to focus on delivering a solid game streaming platform that will being in the best 3rd party developers moving forward.
This is probably the best approach for Google Stadia. Google is known for their cutting edge technology, not for their creative endeavors. The more they focus on delivering a solid platform experience for both gamers and developers the more everyone will benefit.
